With the 2007 theme camp list now available, you might see that Hookahdome is not on it. It's no typo - Hookahdome, as a theme camp, is taking a breather this year. That's not to say we don't love you. We DO.

And if you love us and want to chill with us or say hi, a number of the Hookahdome peeps are shacking up with the good folks of Spoon Return Center, located at Evolution and Esplanade. More Hookahdome peeps will be spread out far and wide with a variety of other theme camps, and you can probably find out where they went by also visiting Spoon Return Camp and asking.

I'm pleased to note that the MAGIC CARPET ART CAR is back this year, after taking a break in 2006. Find it at Spoon Return Camp, or listen for the phat beats approaching from a mile away.

If any hookans want to chime in where they can be found this year, please go for it! I'll start.

I'll be with the Winking Lotus gang, also dome-less. We do not know where we are camping, a spot will appear when we reach the playa. I'll leave a message with HD/Spoon central.

Hey! Someone referred me to this tribe for my question. Please help!!!

So, I bought a hookah pipe about a year ago and never fired it up. I need some trouble shooting advice.

I have a hafla coming up this weekend and told people I would be breaking out the hookah pipe. Well, tonight I took it for a test run and it's like smoking a slightly flavored cigerette (or just charcoal). Not at all like the hookah's I've had in bars which I remembered being all fruity and very little cigarette taste. I never liked cigarettes and I remembered hookah smoking as being nothing like cigerettes at all.

The self igniting charcoal takes a while to get started and is grey until you take a puff then it burns. We tried starting the tobacco then, after it is fully hot, putting it into the pipe. The tobacco doesn't seem to be burning much. It takes forever for the smoke chamber to fill up. We tried using aluminum foil with some holes punched in it (to hold the charcoal) because we thought that the tobacco wasn't getting hot enough. The pipe is about an inch submerged underwater. In playing with water levels during the night of trying to fix this, I got some water in the hose, but blew it out.

What am I doing wrong? (I will buy some new tobacco too, but one of my theories is that the tobacco is too old since it's from a year ago, but has been in it's original containers and moist and smells very strong and nice still. The charcoal is also that old) Any other theories?

Thanks!

To all the beautiful people,

Soul Candy ... man, what a night!

Many of us are still processing Saturday's event, but clearly it was
something very special. We'd like to dearly thank each of you for
blessing our humble party with yourself ... and for supporting your
neighborhood Hookahdome.

A special heartfelt thank-you also goes out to all the dancers,
performers, and DJs ... The central action of the party was in your
hands, and you truly made it magical. The dancing was as good as it
comes, and there wasn't a moment in nine full hours that hookah room
wasn't the most spectacular place ever.

We've been flattered by all the feedback we've been receiving from
everyone. Our apologies for not [yet!] being able to respond to it
all personally, but we remind you that the most meaningful attraction
of the whole party, was *you*. All our friends! Hookahdome is just a
big, comfy, decadent mirror - It reflects your own collective love
back at you. Thank you all, for filling our space with a sense of
community that was amazing.

We have repurposed the website http://soulcandy3.com into a forum for
the party's afterglow. If you've got any pictures to share, or
stories to tell, please let us know (email hookahdome@gmail.com) and
we'll work with you to get it up there for all to appreciate.

So, if you find yourself glowing, don't worry, you're not alone and
you don't need to seek immediate medical attention. Take your glowing
self out to the world and rub it off on other people. After all,
isn't that why we do all this crazy stuff? The world can use a good
healthy dose of community & positivity right now ...

Whew!

We love you all.

Sincerely,
the Hookahdome family

You guys have provided the best place to hang out on the playa year after year and it is much appreciated. You guys know just how to put that lil magic into the mix.
I had one of the most memorable nights last friday. The music was totally awesome (thanks Nate for generously giving me a CD) and the atmosphere and the dancers were mesmerising. Also want to thank Ararhat (the mountain) for providing the precious drink of water for my parched and thirsty mouth.

I was wondering if anyone could provide me the contact information of Shy from San Diego. I met him at the Hookahdome kitchen and later we shared a beautiful sunrise on the playa. I would really like to get in touch with him and am totally regretting not having taken his contact information. I think he has lots of friends at the Hookahdome and would greatly appreciate if someone would let me know how I can get in touch with him.

Thanks for your help and cant wait to hang out at the dome next year.

Look for the dome, the fire torches, the massive frontage space for fun and frolicking, and clouds of heavenly hookah smoke - that would be ground zero for the Hookahdome.

or a real treat for yourself, and it's all for a good cause.

I'll start: being a part of this camp is hard. There is so much work to do in order to run the camp for a few days. Some of you know that the dome took some damage during Sunday's windstorm. It was a heartbreaker at the time. It also pulled the camp together and everyone doubled their efforts in fixing what had broken. We lost a whole day and opened Tuesday night.
And then it all became worth it. When I sat in the dome with my old friends and my new friends, I couldn't help but feel proud of all this group had accomplished. Outside was heat and craziness. Inside was sensuous tranquillity. The spin jam and hoop down was brilliant and I want to thank all the dancers and DJs who helped bring it alive.
I'm happy that the hookahs blazed the coolest and tastiest smokes ever. I'm no expert with professional/retail hookah lounges in the real world, but I have never felt the need to - my experience with my camp and friends is enough. I have a feeling, though, that we provide "good value for money."
The bottom line is that this year I feel drained, but very accomplished. Cheers, everyone.

Imagine entering a softly lit exotic Hookah lounge draped in mystery and intrigue. Gently walking through a sea of beautiful spirits, your ears are filled with the chill beats of Egyptian drums and downbeat rhythms. Cast away your shoes & relax with your kin on a bed of tantalizingly soft pillows. Then breathe in the sweet scent of smoldering hookah tobacco as you are captivated by the undulations of the most incredible belly dancers you'll ever witness.

Let yourself be lured to the dancefloor by sumptuously thumpin' bass and get your groove on to the finest of SF's signature sounds as channeled by Janaka Selekta, Rhythmystic and more! Allow your eyes to wander over the writhing crowd in search of your soul mate, and dance the night away together. Then retire to the roof deck and take a dip in the steaming Jacuzzi tub while you sip your favorite elixir. As the sun rises, join your new tribe for continental breakfast in the Hookah lounge, wondering if you'll ever awaken from this amazing dream.

Yes, this is an interrogation from the 9th ring of the Plasmodium Zex, gyrating the zenith of civilization like a retarded Asian bellydancer. Watch how she spasms. See how she gimps along the wrong song with a gong welcoming CHAOS.
And in this moment, all the spittle and cake of the plasmodium has heaved itself upon the sacrificial altar for inspection- every last nuance reveals its twisted divinity- every speck of salt on every stale pretzel- every ingrown hair on the vast expanse of jerkied sex appeal.
In this wailing biosphere of neon sweat and shamelessness, we mine our good fortune. We are the chosen ones- runny pantyhose and all.

Before we start talking about Borg1 and Borg2, or Borg3.14,
I would like to open up a topic which has come up before and really needs to be addressed:

As I am only in my second year with the Hookans, I cannot relay the entire history or reasons why or why not (wonderful, loving techies with no concept of self promotion?), yet to my knowledge, Hookahdome has never had a fundraiser. I'm not sure if folks are aware that we do most everything out of pocket. Well, if we want to consider the wonderful ideas often talked about here, let alone keeping the HDome and Flying Carpet going, then we's gotta start getting some camp funding going. There is a whole laundry list of stuff that needs to be addressed, much of which is facilitated by... cash!

There are quite a few bigger theme camps that seem to excel at this, so perhaps we could learn a thing or two from them. Parties where everyone pays is a good start, either at a house or a place like Cell Space, and obviously camp fees are there too... IPO's, MLM's, and margin trading kinda went out with the nineties, so cross those off the list. Since so many of our neighbors want to coalesce into the Hookah Local Cluster, maybe we can get some good, cogent, thought-out ideas and plans?
15 Ways to Cater to the Rich? Stalinist 5-year plans? VooDoo Economics?
Hidden lines in omnibus porkbarrel legislation snuck through congress?
Intense hours of beer consumption and dicking around in the garage?

Let's think big!

I'm all for guerilla marketing too, yet not sure if that is applicable.
This thread will hopefully serve as a *reminder to us all... hedonism is a duty and isn't always free.

Hello all -

This will be my first year at burning man... I'm quite excited. I caught wind of your camp through friends Brian and Monet... they talked me into going this year, and it seems a good time to go (will have graduated by then) and now I'm definately going....

So I hear the whole thing is what you bring to it, yah know, everyone creating the everything, together and forever...

so my hope is to create a Sleep Reducer Installation / Tent something.

So what's sleep reducer? It's brain entrainment to the delta frequency. Roight. For those that aren't familiar with this science gobbledygook, the idea is you present the ears with slightly different frequencies so the brain interprets the difference, and due to the fact that all things vibrate and tend to be influenced by other vibrating things, the brain starts to mimick the pattern produced by the interference. (very rough version of theory)

So, say present left ear = 500 Hz, right ear 510 Hz. Brain interprets as 10 Hz, which is the alpha frequency, which is correlated with an "relaxed but alert" state of mind.

The sleep reducer program brings the brain down to the Delta frequency, that found in deep sleep. This is done for 30 minutes or so. And because in normal sleep patterns, the brain goes in and out of the delta frequency (through the REM cycles and what-have-you), this 30 minute entrainment of delta pattern is equivalent to the amount of delta pattern sleep you'd get in 4 hours.

for more exploration: http://www.bwgen.com/
and I just discovered this one, maybe I'll utilize it also:
http://www.transparentcorp.com/products/np/index.php?service=google&keyword=binaural

Perhaps I'll implement the visual entrainment also. Who knows.

I've used this thing for the past 4 years to augment the loss of sleep attributed to school work and poor time management. Well, not poor time management, but poorly manifested time? Ah who knows.

So, I figure this little tool could come in handy for folks at a festival where sleep is one of those things that seems to just kinda slip away from the realm of necessities, and then WHAM there's a purple monkey dishwasher.

So, moral of this ridiculously long pose is HI!

And I have no idea what I need to do to make this happen. The equipment is merely a bunch of cd-players (probobly 5? 7?) and headphones, and the ppl under entrainment need a place to either lie down or sit down. And I guess i'll just bring a lot of batteries or attempt to fight needless consumption by building some kind of solar panel / rechargable battery array. My main issue is the accomodation for the subject. Should I just bring one of those huge 12 person tents? They get pretty hot. I dunno.

So, lemme know what yah think of this idear and any suggestions on how I should perform this magic would be great because I've never been.

Or have I?

Happy snow day from the North East!

Hey guys, this is Sam, I spun and spat for the fire jam on Wednesday. I met Heath and someone else from the dome who's name I sadly forgot. I just wanted to say I had a great time, and the good music and energy of the crowd gave me what I needed to do my best spinning of the week.

Plus, actually having safeties was great. I'm gonna rant for a second... 90% of the people I spun with on the playa were like, 'safeties, what do we need that for?' while they spun around on their toy-poi made out of jackchain and keyrings. Freaked me out, some people lose their respect for the fire way too fast for their own good. Things were good at Hookahdome though, always someone safety-ing attentively (which I happily shared in the duties of), someone actually paying attention to how many spinners were out at once, maintaining perimiters, etc. I was really happy to see it, since by Wed i was beginning to think that spinners from St. Louis were the only ones with a concept of safety and risk management. Thanks for proving me wrong. :)

Heath, sorry I didn't manage to hook back up with you for some fire breathing, but I'd be happy to coach you through it, the key is comfort with the fire, which you clearly have. Some good practice, and you'll be aspirating like a madman (which you'll be, of course). Thanks for the hugs, I love a huggy person.

I'm bummed I never made it into the dome proper... There was always a line, and I didn't want to be pushy. I really should have been more pushy though, given what was going on inside. ;)

Well, if anyone has pictures of the fire jam, I'd love to see them. I've been poking through the freekin' 1200 digital pictures my campmates took, and I think there are a few of hookahdome and the magic carpet in there. I'll post them as I identify them. :)

Oh yeah, bitchin' music. Everything I heard there was right out of my playlist. I love breakbeats and trance, but I was happy to hear some shpongle, amon tobin, talvin singh, etc. Very good stuff, and it kept with the mood perfectly. Your camp was among the most thematically connected of any that I saw, down to the magic carpet.

Anyway, sweet camp, it was a pleasure to burn with you.

peace,

Every year when I camp with Hookahdome I come away with memories of some of those tasty beats. My first year it was Govinda's Entwined and Entranced and Warren's Magic Carpet Mix (especially Green Velvet's Destination Unknown, what a great moment of dancing on the Carpet!).
The next year, 2002, the big song was, apparently Burning Ring of Fire.
2003 I fondly recall lots of Lemon Jelly and Boards of Canada and Royksopp's Eple (or Epie) on the Carpet.
This year, what's it gonna be?

* Digital Underground's We're Freaks of the Industry
* The second or third song from the Black Light Performers, goddamit who's the artist? Soren, please listen to the music in your videotape and maybe we can glean a song title off it.
* Shpongle. I'm listening to some of their stuff now. yummy. Get some of this music on the carpet for next year. :)
* some calming and exotic tibetan bells or gamelon music I heard in the wee hours thursday night after the pyjama party. It was probably 4 am.
* The Culprits playing in the dome one morning. I could hear their music across the playa almost to the Man.
* Er, how about Foreigner's I want to know what love is? Playing on the carpet that quiet and lazy friday morning.
* always always Boards of Canada. Can someone help me find the Alpha Quest remix of "Roygbiv" ?

Got any others?

I loved the Hookah Dome! It was my favorite place to go dance... the music always moved me... I didn't partake in the actual hookahs but I enjoyed being a part of the atmosphere...
This might seem silly... but I am interested in finding a man I danced with at burning man in the hookah dome... it could have been tuesday or thursday night? the night is a bit blurry...due to a certain vowel ;) and the lack of time awareness in the desert.... I think his name was robert... he was wearing a red cape and red pants... he had dark brown shoulder length hair and very tan skin... I took his cape off and danced around with it and him... he was an excellent dancer... I was wearing red ruffley underwear and a fuzzy tube sock thingy on one leg.... it was SOOOOOO much fun.... oh how I would love to dance with him again... like I said... it might seem silly but I believe in possabilities... and it's possible he'll read this or someone he knows will read this ;) any leads? hee hee :)
thanks for yer eye balls pass it on

I visited the Hookahdome on Monday night and when I removed my shoes, I placed them inside by boyfriend's shoes. Later that evening when I went to the porta-potty, I noticed that my shoes were missing. I looked all over for them, as did my boyfriend and friends and a hookahdome staff person. They were not found. I returned a couple of times through the week and was directed to a lost and found pile, but did not find them.

They are a pair of blue patent leather Mary Jane heels. Mary Janes are buckle shoes, like girls used to wear in grade school. They are about a size 8 or so and have white scuff marks on the toes and heels. The straps have additional holes poked in them as well.

They have been to Burning Man all three years I have attended and I would love to have them back so if anyone knows where they are, please contact me.

Thanks very much.

And thank you for the hookahdome. I only went inside the dome the one night, but me and my friends were by the site at least once every night.
