Wed. Fire Jam!

Hey guys, this is Sam, I spun and spat for the fire jam on Wednesday. I met Heath and someone else from the dome who's name I sadly forgot. I just wanted to say I had a great time, and the good music and energy of the crowd gave me what I needed to do my best spinning of the week.

Plus, actually having safeties was great. I'm gonna rant for a second... 90% of the people I spun with on the playa were like, 'safeties, what do we need that for?' while they spun around on their toy-poi made out of jackchain and keyrings. Freaked me out, some people lose their respect for the fire way too fast for their own good. Things were good at Hookahdome though, always someone safety-ing attentively (which I happily shared in the duties of), someone actually paying attention to how many spinners were out at once, maintaining perimiters, etc. I was really happy to see it, since by Wed i was beginning to think that spinners from St. Louis were the only ones with a concept of safety and risk management. Thanks for proving me wrong. :)

Heath, sorry I didn't manage to hook back up with you for some fire breathing, but I'd be happy to coach you through it, the key is comfort with the fire, which you clearly have. Some good practice, and you'll be aspirating like a madman (which you'll be, of course). Thanks for the hugs, I love a huggy person.

I'm bummed I never made it into the dome proper... There was always a line, and I didn't want to be pushy. I really should have been more pushy though, given what was going on inside. ;)

Well, if anyone has pictures of the fire jam, I'd love to see them. I've been poking through the freekin' 1200 digital pictures my campmates took, and I think there are a few of hookahdome and the magic carpet in there. I'll post them as I identify them. :)

Oh yeah, bitchin' music. Everything I heard there was right out of my playlist. I love breakbeats and trance, but I was happy to hear some shpongle, amon tobin, talvin singh, etc. Very good stuff, and it kept with the mood perfectly. Your camp was among the most thematically connected of any that I saw, down to the magic carpet.

Anyway, sweet camp, it was a pleasure to burn with you.

peace,
sam

I suspect much of the kudos went to Orbit, who organized the fire jam, spun a good number of times that night and probably helped out a lot with safety. :)
Glad you enjoyed Wednesday night. Personally, in terms of events, I find it to often be one of the best nights!

Hey! I'm glad you had a great time, Sam. We were lucky to have Shimmer, one of Crimson's assistants help run safety for a while... I know things sometimes get a bit fast-and-loose on the playa, but it doesn't take much to take a few basic precautions. I know more than one person that got burns on the playa this year from fire spinning... and we had our share of close calls that night.

Sam, Thank YOU for fire dancing. I never truly "got" fire dancing until that night. And I saw most of the spinning under the Hookahdome pyramids while doing the door, and it totally rocked my world.

The energy the dancers were riding that night was surreal and I am thankful to have been there.

Hopefully 2005 will be as ripe for such amazing stuff!

I would like to see any photos of that night too!

Yes, I felt the energy! It was a good night to burn... I do a lot of different sorts of things in my life, but nothing else feeds on energy quite like fire. Some days I'm awful, literally awful. I can barely do basic moves, my body feels stiff, I make mistakes, etc. But when the time is right, the right people around, the right music, the right whatever, I can feel everything fall into place, and my spinning becomes markedly different. Fire needs fuel, and not just white gas. It needs excitement, energy, and rhythm. The people watching play a much bigger part in how I do than they might realize.

Its hard to predict what night will be a good night, but when it happens, you know.

You know the crowd around the pyramid during the fire performances that night was, I believe the biggest single congregation of people in that desert since BM'03. Easily 500 people, more than a dozen art cars parked beyond...

Though somewhat overwhelming for us running the place, it felt really good. Thank you so much for performing! We will definitely be doing this again.

I have some video footage of the scene, but it's not digital unfortunately. I do recall seeing a photograph from across the esplanade, but I don't remember how much of the performer was visible or if it was you. I'll try to locate it & post if I find it.

    Soren
