Hookah procedure:

- place tobacco in bowl
- cover bowl with foil down to around the base of the bowl
- cut small slits with knife, enough to get good airflow when puffing, and to heat the tobacco. Or use hookah poker to punch holes.
- make sure you have enough water, like at least fill the spherical portion.
- Hold charcoal with tongs and light until it stays lit. There will be gray areas around the edges at least
- Place charcoal on top of foil over the tobacco
- If there multiple hoses, block off all but one.
- Whoever has the best lung power gets to start the tobacco. MAKE SURE ONLY ONE HOSE IS OPEN. Give it some massive draws until you start getting smoke. May take a 30 secs or so. Make sure you hear water gurgling well.
- Once it's lit, it shouldn't take much draw to get smoke
- If one charcoal doesn't keep it lit, try two
- stirring the tobacco might help if it tastes a little burnt.
- Enjoy!

BTW, if you have bad results with one kind of tobacco, try others. Ask for recommendations at the shop. Also get good charcoal that lights easily and lasts a long time.

Let us know how it goes for you. If you expert instruction, I'm available for parties, good rates. ;)

I know it should be tasting pleasant and fruity, Asyia. The hookah geniuses in here should be able to help you, but be patient as I'm not sure how frequently any of them check this tribe now that burning man is in the off-season.
In the hookahdome, we use tin foil with a LOT of tiny little holes punched around in a circle and we place two discs of charcoal on top (to be rotated once every half hour or so to avoid burning the tobacco too much) and that does wonderful things for us.

Hey! Someone referred me to this tribe for my question. Please help!!!

So, I bought a hookah pipe about a year ago and never fired it up. I need some trouble shooting advice.

I have a hafla coming up this weekend and told people I would be breaking out the hookah pipe. Well, tonight I took it for a test run and it's like smoking a slightly flavored cigerette (or just charcoal). Not at all like the hookah's I've had in bars which I remembered being all fruity and very little cigarette taste. I never liked cigarettes and I remembered hookah smoking as being nothing like cigerettes at all.

The self igniting charcoal takes a while to get started and is grey until you take a puff then it burns. We tried starting the tobacco then, after it is fully hot, putting it into the pipe. The tobacco doesn't seem to be burning much. It takes forever for the smoke chamber to fill up. We tried using aluminum foil with some holes punched in it (to hold the charcoal) because we thought that the tobacco wasn't getting hot enough. The pipe is about an inch submerged underwater. In playing with water levels during the night of trying to fix this, I got some water in the hose, but blew it out.

What am I doing wrong? (I will buy some new tobacco too, but one of my theories is that the tobacco is too old since it's from a year ago, but has been in it's original containers and moist and smells very strong and nice still. The charcoal is also that old) Any other theories?

Thanks!
