This to argue about the line out front of the Hookahdome. This is the biggest complaint, practically the only one.

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Maybe put a taller stage in the center and make the dome bigger. Or extend openings to the outer spaces available. All art should be made available for everyone to see. I understand the vibe, but I really feel like I was kept out :( Oh well, maybe next year.

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Taller stage - hmm... I have to think about that one. It might take away from the feeling of togetherness in there. And of course the large beautiful Indo Heriz carpet in the center wouldn't fit.
Someone mentioned adding a window. We've talked about this too, the idea being many folks in line just want to know what's going on, not necessarily interested in staying in there if only they knew. Problem with the window is inside the dome would feel like folks are watching you - less private.
Some have suggested video feed for the same approach, but I'll be caught dead when there's cameras in the dome.
Bigger dome? Don't say that! :) We really really don't want to re-build the dome. We just finished building this one a couple months ago! Anyway, this would probably work, though it'd make everything more difficult for us to set up, etc. and we have to re-do the carpeting, covering, etc. and bigger might mean less cozy. It's not out of the question though.
One big main idea is to have a no sleeping rule. Unconscious people aren't good dome energy anyway, most think. This is our leading approach. Sleeping people take up more room and bring down the energy. We'll have to present a list of rules as people enter then. This should go far.
Anyway, there's some thoughts, thanks for the input!
I know the line sucks and we're really sorry you got the feeling you did from it. We will definitely improve things for next year.

Sat, September 11, 2004 - 5:35 PMContinued from other thread (at bottom):
Some happy medium between keeping the current dome feel, to accomodate a line, yet in a place where not so many more casual passers by will come to step into line to "What's going on in there?"
Maybe off on the 2:00 or 10:00 streets or 3:00 or 9:00 plazas.
Considering places like Pinky's or Pink Mammoth or Deep End, where large crowds locate out and in and around their street corners, perhaps you could locate more within the city?

Re: We want to know, what you're thinking. Tell us what's on your mind.
Recommendation: PLEASE don't locate on the Esplanade again next year: This as you know will cut down on the long lines. I made it in (was it Tues or Wed night) and saw some great dancing--great lighting, atmosphere, music, dancing--didn't smoke.
Each successive night I found either a long line, members only allowed, closed, or nonperformances--which is ok, but I really dug your place A LOT!
Thanks!

Re: We want to know, what you're thinking. Tell us what's on your mind.
We can't really be off-Esplanade, though you're right that it would make the line go away. We can draw crowds of many hundreds out front, where an off-Esplanade spot couldn't accomodate. Plus we do a lot of fire art which they frown upon off-Esplanade.
But, we all mostly agree the line has to go. There is a very active discussion on how we're going to do this.
I'll make a post addressing the damn line, and copy in some of the circulating ideas.
Thanks for the input! -

Re: The Line!
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 10:26 PMHey, if you're popular, you're popular... and we got overwhelmed!
The dome is only 40' in diameter. Lines are going to be inevitable, even if some super rich person gifted us with funds to buy a huge 6V superdome or two super domes linked together, maybe lofts even, with many more evaporative coolers, fine Persian carpets, six more hookahs and tables, an even more outrageously powerful sound system, Turkish Delight on silver platters, non stop entertainment from around the world... we still couldn't possibly let every single person in that wanted to come in at one time.
The nice thing is that as the week progressed, the in/out ratio seemed to take on a balancing act of its own. The number of people that came in and saw how crowded it was when the door was not manned seemed to balance with the number that finally left after their 6 to 8 hour nappy, bless their little sleepy heads...
The other nice thing is that the number of yahoos or people that "didn't quite get it" dropped off dramatically after Wednesday night. People seemed to be grateful that we existed at all... and it was a true joy to be able to accomodate the many we did. By weeks end the doors were pretty much open and it seemed like every person that came was an amazing, cool person.

Re: The Line!
Sat, September 11, 2004 - 5:53 PMYeah, sadly the line kept me out too. I didn't really know what was going on inside, despite the fun I had outside. I'm not sure what you'd do to change that though, given that it seems like the inside was a nice easy-going place, a fragile environ out on the playa.
I'm always hip to bigger domes, but having built a few myself, I can understand your not wanting to make a bigger one so soon. ;) Plus, steel prices are through the roof now.
Maybe if there was more going on outside too? Maybe there could be an extended shade structure coming off the front of the dome that was very open, but with a stage for some performances, that way stuff could be going on both places. You could even open up the front of the dome occasionally to 'connect' the two locations, and then during bad weather, or when stuff wasn't going on at the outdoor stage, you could close the dome back up a bit.
I dunno, just some ramblin' ideas. You could also just do nothing, and live with the fact that you are popular, and that if you changed yourself too much to accomodate the popularity, you would lose some of your original spirit (sound like another org you can think of? *sly wink*).
peace,
sam

Re: The Line!
Sun, September 12, 2004 - 8:13 AMwhat needs to happen is people need something to do wile in line.....the fire dancing was good for night but then it also means that we do two shows at once????? so a chill spot like a "weighting room'? bus or army tent... a little stageing area...then instead of having a line at the dome they will stand in front of the tent??? or the bus??? huge shade area????
letting more people in the dome or making it bigger is much more work for all of us......no sleeping in the dome for sure.......
peace...

Re: The Line!
Sun, September 12, 2004 - 4:35 PMThe size of the dome was good. A bigger dome might be a less cozy space. It would have a different feel, anyhow. The limits on people in the dome were good. It felt just about right.
The line wasn't that bad (30-45 minutes) considering what was at the end of it.
More than one hookahdome might shrink the line. There are obvious resource, logistic and management issues. Maybe semi structured line activities? Similar to bigger/more domes but with fewer resource issues.
The dome is good. Queues are an inevitable result. If people don't think the dome is fun enough to wait a bit for then they won't line up. I see it as self regulating.

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Over-packed Hookahdome is bad - stuffy, hot, crowded, less room for performance, difficult/stressful to serve guests and tend hookahs.
Lines are bad - annoying wait, Disney stigma, VIP stigma, spawns nefarious behavior (scams to sneak in), quells front-of-camp energy.
So on the playa we did a little of both during the week, and thankfully the result was overwhelmingly good, not bad :) But of course our logical minds are busy concocting ways to get as close as possible to the best of both worlds for next year. If anyone has ideas to contribute, please post them up on the Hookahdome tribe we have created for this purpose!
Thanks,

Re: The Line!
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 2:06 AMI'd just like to re-suggest something that I was advocating early in the dome design process... sort of a raised dome -- which can mean either raising the dome off the ground or just building squared-off additions to the sides. The squared off area can be covered or un-covered like the army tent to allow for privacy or traffic flow as desired.
Kinda like this but shorter:

Re: The Line!
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 8:15 AMthat would be an easy addition but we would only grow taller not gaining any more floor space just more volume...... that may keep the hot air up and the cool air down???

Re: The Line!
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 10:32 PMoh sure, Orbit. Just like that...and then we'll be on Al-Qeada's hit list for blasphemy.
what will they think of next over at MIT?
but seriously, would a raised dome be as sturdy? -
-
Unsu...
Re: The Line!
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 12:07 AMIt would be less sturdy for sure. Nothing's sturdier than playa. And, of course, the geodesic dome only works when its entire base is supported-- otherwise it will deform. (actually, I bet we could get away with supporting just the verticies.) From an engineering point of view, I trust the dome. I can't think of a propped-up dome design I trust as much. Well, maybe if we used a big, square granite mosque with 10 foot-thick walls.
But I've always liked the look of the dome-meets-box architecture-- I think I saw Orbit sketching something like that almost a year ago. We could get the same look without messing with the engineering by leaving the dome on the ground and building a box around the outside.
Won't do nothin to increase capacity, of course. -

Re: The Line!
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 10:59 AMI like that idea. I think it'd look great.

Tue, September 21, 2004 - 7:52 PMThere was a request for Arabic jokes earlier in this string, so here is one:
Nasruddin steps into a store. The storekeeper asks him what he needs. Nasruddin answers: “Before I tell you that, I want to ask you a question”
Storekeeper: “Yes”
Nasruddin: “You saw me at the door when I entered the store?”
Storekeeper: “Yes, I did see you enter”
Nasruddin: ”Have you ever seen me before today?”
Storekeeper: “No, I haven’t”
Nasruddin: “So, you don’t know me”
Storekeepr: “No, I don’t”
Nasruddin: “Then when you saw me walk in, how did you know that it is me?”

Re: The Line!

Re: The Line!
Tue, September 21, 2004 - 2:06 AMThat's alot like Damon's idea of building walls around the dome (with fabric) to accomodate a flow of traffic and give staff more space. Hmm...popped up twice now, maybe a good idea. not raised though, just inside a larger structure.

Re: The Line!
Tue, September 21, 2004 - 5:22 PMI'd like to thank everyone who worked on the Hookahdome. Damned fine, if you ask me. If there was a line, I moved on. It's not like there's nothing else to do. I'd come back at 5am and walk right in. Don't worry about the line. If people are silly enough to stand in a line for an hour at BM, let 'em. Have 'em fill out a really long complaint form on easily combustible paper while they wait, if ya know what I mean. Wink wink.
I have no complaints at all. Just a suggestion. Perhaps a slightly better sound system. -

Re: The Line!
Tue, September 21, 2004 - 5:23 PM.... and strippers and a pole. (haha) -
-
Re: The Line!
Wed, September 22, 2004 - 11:14 AMNow THAT'S the attitude we like to hear!
That's what I like about LA & NY folks, they respect the line. We Bay Area kids are new to the concept, so we weren't quite prepared.
We could leave the mast (a flagpole we use to set it up) in for a stripper pole, but it might knock over the rest of the dome. The crank arm would be in the way too... no no no, we want to keep things more traditional- like belly dancing, hoolah hoops, Brazilian acrobats, and, of course, people in furry costumes rolling around on the carpet at 3am... -
-
Re: The Line!
Wed, September 22, 2004 - 3:15 PMI agree. The strippers can dance up against the entranceway pillars if they really need a pole.
If strippers start complaining about regulation size stripper poles, then there's no shortage of stripper poles on the art cars parked out front. Complaining strippers, sheesh ... who needs 'em!

Re: The Line!
Thu, October 14, 2004 - 2:05 PMI just love the complaint form idea!!!! Ha Ha ha ha hahaha
Thanks for the persective shift..... Hookahn hearts are so freaking big....
this group sets it's sights at the highest potential and joyfully slaves to please as many as possible regarding as much as possible.... and then proceed to work miracles! highly commendable
But, I think we can all benefit from remembering that once we've done our best with something, it's best to just take any further suggestions for improvement lightly (and deflect outright complaints entirely).
As individuals and collectively, I suggest we be aware of this:
our energies must be conserved and directed if we want to serve our highest potential.... sometimes that means controlling our environment/what we are exposed to.... sometimes this even means we completely disregard what others are doing & saying --even if it seems they mean well
let's see if I can put my point in clearer, more concise terms????
Sometimes it's good enough.
Sometimes we can give ourselves permission to just enjoy what IS.
If challenged, (by someone who's not "there" with us) we can point out the good we see, (with a grateful manner) and then tra la la our way to someone who's already on the same wavelength....
that's not rude, it's respectful
blah blah blah gonna put away the soapbox now and go play ;-) -
-
Re: The Line!
Thu, October 14, 2004 - 2:14 PMpersective=perspective .... you knew what I meant
even if the rest of what I said meant nothing to you
wait, how do I even know you're there?
keep those so-called Arabic jokes coming people, I like that sense of humor nearly as much as Damon's .... that should be a new thread though.... someone with a joke want to start that thread???
thanks everybody for your comments, but especially your jokes.... Arabic or "Hick" all jokes are equal in my eyes.... unless of course they're not funny. ah ha ha hahahaha! wait, was that even funny....?
