Fundraising for Hookahdome

Before we start talking about Borg1 and Borg2, or Borg3.14,
I would like to open up a topic which has come up before and really needs to be addressed:

As I am only in my second year with the Hookans, I cannot relay the entire history or reasons why or why not (wonderful, loving techies with no concept of self promotion?), yet to my knowledge, Hookahdome has never had a fundraiser. I'm not sure if folks are aware that we do most everything out of pocket. Well, if we want to consider the wonderful ideas often talked about here, let alone keeping the HDome and Flying Carpet going, then we's gotta start getting some camp funding going. There is a whole laundry list of stuff that needs to be addressed, much of which is facilitated by... cash!

There are quite a few bigger theme camps that seem to excel at this, so perhaps we could learn a thing or two from them. Parties where everyone pays is a good start, either at a house or a place like Cell Space, and obviously camp fees are there too... IPO's, MLM's, and margin trading kinda went out with the nineties, so cross those off the list. Since so many of our neighbors want to coalesce into the Hookah Local Cluster, maybe we can get some good, cogent, thought-out ideas and plans?
15 Ways to Cater to the Rich? Stalinist 5-year plans? VooDoo Economics?
Hidden lines in omnibus porkbarrel legislation snuck through congress?
Intense hours of beer consumption and dicking around in the garage?

Let's think big!

I'm all for guerilla marketing too, yet not sure if that is applicable.
This thread will hopefully serve as a *reminder to us all... hedonism is a duty and isn't always free.

Tag, you're it.

Btw, I was only kidding about the no sense of self promotion:
the carpet, the pyramids, the sound system, the sign and lighting attest to that...
all part of the inherent beauty of these efforts and speak for themselves organically.

What I'm talking about is that elusive divide between rape and seduction: salesmanship.

Why are you bringing this up here, in a public forum instead of on the slightly more private Hookahdome mailing list?

Because it needs to be discussed in both settings- obviously the other one is going to be the nuts and bolts, yet here is where a wider public is able to communicate and give input- like people in other camps that have had successful fundraising and who also are interested in HD.

I am only in my sixth year with the Hookans and I agree with Roger.

        What makes the Carpet fly?

Magic, let's keep the behind-the-scenes mystery of how Hookahdome is operated and funded private.

        "out of pocket" means Gift.

I think this is fuzzy thinking and fuzzy math.

I was actually objecting to this in 2 ways: 1) makes planning details public... 2) doesn't reach everyone on the HD list since not everyone is here. I can see what you're saying about #1... and #2 is moot now that there's chatter on the HD list.

On tribe it isn't about planning details for HD- this is for making the community aware and inviting them to participate- obviously nothing is going to happen here first without the HD members having a discussion over it.

And, I think we might have some concrete plans that will help get the ball rolling:

One simple way is having a party that extended community members can come to as well as spread the word for. I live in a house that has some experience in this with a couple other camps, so I am volunteering to host a couple of these types of events. We have three floors and a hot tub in the Oakland hills, and really easy to get to. Maybe this will happen as soon as March.

              Stay tuned!
